I loved taking them for short, speedy sessions – they’re not a high mileage plodding kind of shoe, but they’re begging for an interval that your usual neutral number just isn’t. The knitted upper has a much more substantial construction – I particularly liked the heel tab to help pull them on – and the outsole is a thing of substance: they don’t feel like they’re going to fall apart after a single marathon, that’s for sure. The other thing to note is that they felt much more ruggedly built than previous incarnations of Alphaflys, Vaporflys and Tempos.

That propulsion is thanks to a number of clever bits of tech tucked away in the sole: the full length carbon fibre plate offers rebound aplenty, the space age Air Pods provide a pogo-tastic toe-off, and the two together are partnered with springy ZoomX foam to cushion your footfall and propel you onwards. That’s not entirely true: the Tempo Next % did a similar trick – see more on that below – but they didn’t have the comfort of the Alphaflys. You are propelled – literally propelled across the tarmac in a way in which no other shoe has matched that I’ve run in. Because as soon as you set off, you feel as though you have a distinct advantage over every other runner. The Alphafly offer a unique running perspective: it’s as though someone has strapped you into some tiny foot-shaped pogo sticks.

The heel is padded and doesn’t rub, and the feel underfoot… Well. The flyknit upper hugs your foot in such a comforting (and non-compressive) way, you could almost do without the laces. That said, once in place, they felt glorious. If you’ve got wide feet or a high arch, consider this especially, as we found it tough to pull these bad boys on.

Go up half a size! Nike tells you to, and they’re right. They’re built for speed, for racing, and for crushing PBs, and we have absolutely no doubt that they will do that in droves. These beautiful shoes are for fast runners, and not only that but fast runners who want to run even faster.

But if your next goal is to try and shave seconds or even minutes off a race time – and to do that, you really need a good training plan stuck on your fridge – and you’re desperate for anything that might give you an edge, then it’s worth taking a longer look at these super shoes. These are not ordinary running shoes – for comfort and everyday miles, you need to be looking at something like the On Cloudrunner, the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v12, or the Brooks Glycerin 20. Why? Because these shoes have made cult – even legendary – status as the shoes that have propelled countless runners to outperform even their own expectations.
